1 There are things that raise the mikveh and do not invalidate it, that invalidate and do not raise it, and that neither raise nor invalidate it. These raise and do not invalidate: snow, hail, frost, ice, salt, and thin mud. Rabbi Akiva said: Rabbi Yishmael used to argue against me, saying that snow does not raise the mikveh; but the men of Medeva testified in his name that he said to them: Go out and bring snow and make a mikveh from the beginning. Rabbi Yochanan ben Nuri says: A hailstone is like water. How do they raise and not invalidate? A mikveh that has forty se'ah less one, and a se'ah of them fell into it and raised it — they are found to raise and not invalidate.

2 These invalidate and do not raise: water, whether impure or pure, and water of pickled vegetables and water of boiled vegetables, and temed until it has fermented. How do they invalidate and not raise? A mikveh that has forty se'ah less a kortov, and a kortov of them fell into it — it did not raise it, and it invalidates it with three log. But other liquids, and fruit juices, and brine, and fish-brine, and temed after it has fermented, sometimes raise and sometimes do not raise. How so? A mikveh that has forty se'ah less one, and a se'ah of them fell into it — it did not raise it; if it had forty se'ah, and one put in a se'ah and took out a se'ah — this is valid.

3 If one rinsed in it baskets of olives or baskets of grapes and they changed its appearance, it is valid. Rabbi Yose says: Dye-water invalidates it with three log, but does not invalidate it by change of appearance. If wine or mohal fell into it and changed its appearance, it is invalid. What should one do? Wait until rains come down and its appearance returns to the appearance of water; if it had forty se'ah, fill by the shoulder and put into it until its appearance returns to the appearance of water.

Rabbi Yehudah says: If the feet of the first were still touching the water, the second too is pure. If one immersed a thick cloak in it and raised it, and part of it is touching the water, it is pure. A leather cushion or pillow — once one has lifted their edges from the water, the water inside them is drawn water. What should one do? Immerse them and raise them by way of their bottoms.

7 If one immersed a bed in it, even though its legs sink into the thick mud, it is pure, because the water comes first. A mikveh whose waters are shallow — one presses down even bundles of wood, even bundles of reeds, so that the waters will rise, and goes down and immerses. A needle that is placed on the step of a cave — if one was drawing water back and forth, once the wave has passed over it, it is pure.

Rabbi Chananya ben Akashya says: The Holy One, blessed be He, wanted to confer merit upon Israel; therefore He gave them Torah and mitzvot in abundance, as it is said: "The Lord desired, for the sake of His righteousness, to make the Torah great and glorious."
