SHEMA
When reciting the Shema, focus intently upon its meaning. While reciting the opening line (שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל), bear in mind that you are accepting God's sovereignty; while reciting the first paragraph (וְאָהַבְתָּ), bear in mind that you are taking on the commandment to love God; and while reciting the second paragraph (וְהָיָה), bear in mind that you are taking on all of God's commandments. By reciting the third paragraph (וַיֹּאמֶר), you fulfill the commandment of recalling the Exodus from Egypt.
Particular care must be taken to utter each word of the Shema distinctly. Pause at every punctuation mark so that you do not join the words together and change their meaning.

During the next paragraph, touch the hand-tefillin as you say וּקְשַׁרְתָּם לְאוֹת עַל יָדֶךָ, touch the head-tefillin as you say וְהָיוּ לְטֹטָפֹת בֵּין עֵינֶיךָ, and afterward kiss the fingertips.
