THE SHEMA

Recite the Shema with intense concentration, above all the opening two verses wherein we accept the sovereignty of God. Aloud recite the first verse, covering your eyes with your right hand.
Do not slur over the ח, but prolong it slightly, for as long as affirming God's sovereignty in the seven heavens and on earth requires—equal to eight, ח's numerical value. Prolong the ד (whose numerical value is four) for as long as reflecting that God is alone in His world and that He rules in all four corners of the universe requires. When reciting the Shema, pause at the commas to convey this meaning: O Israel, hear (pause), the Lord who is our God (pause) is the one God. Further laws appear on page 588.
