SUKKOT

HOSHANOT

Every day of Sukkot, Hoshana Rabbah included, Hoshanot are said at once after Hallel, ahead of Kaddish. Each day, one Hoshanot section is said, the lulav and etrog held, while walking around the bimah. On Hoshana Rabbah, all seven sections are said and seven circuits are made around the bimah. On Shabbat, Hoshanot are omitted—on Sunday, however, the Shabbat section is said first, yet the bimah is not circled while that section is spoken.
A Torah scroll is carried to the bimah and held there through Hoshanot. (Should everyone present possess a lulav and etrog, the scroll is set upon the bimah.) On Hoshana Rabbah every Torah scroll is taken from the Ark and carried to the bimah. The Ark stays open throughout the Hoshanot.
Throughout Hoshanot, the lulav and etrog are clasped at the heart with both hands. Chabad custom is not to circle the bimah on Hoshana Rabbah bearing the five willow twigs.
