THE SHEMA

Recite the Shema with intense concentration, especially the opening two verses wherein we accept the sovereignty of God. Recite the first verse aloud, covering your eyes with your right hand.
Do not slur over the ח, but prolong it slightly for as long as it takes to affirm God's sovereignty throughout the seven heavens and on earth—equal to eight, the numerical value of ח. The ד (whose numerical value is four) should be prolonged for as long as it takes to reflect that God stands alone in His world and that he rules in all four corners of the universe. When reciting the Shema, pause at the commas to convey this meaning: Hear O Israel (pause), the Lord who is our God (pause) is the one God. Consult additional laws on page 588.
See transliteration, page 624.
