CANDLE LIGHTING BLESSINGS

At least eighteen minutes before sunset on Friday the Shabbat lights are kindled. Two candles are lit by married women and many add an additional candle for each child. Once the candle(s) are lit, circle the hands three times about the lights and toward the face, then set them over the eyes and say the fitting blessing. Consult additional laws, page 601. Festival lights too are kindled at least eighteen minutes before sunset. On a festival's second evening, or when Saturday night is the first evening, after nightfall the lights are kindled (approximately 45–60 minutes after sunset) from a pre-existing flame. Should one forget to kindle candles on Friday evening before sunset, they are not to be lit at all.
