This sequence of prayers and blessings, which differs from that found in most prayer books, rests upon the consensus of recent halakhic authorities. See laws 316-324.
Upon waking, the first thought we ought to hold is that we stand in the presence of God. Because we are forbidden to utter God's name until we have washed our hands, the prayer below is said, which, without mentioning God's name, confesses His presence and offers thanks for a new day and for the gift of life.

שֶׁהֶחֱזַרְתָּ בִּי נִשְׁמָתִי בְּחֶמְלָה
