תְּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל לְחֵרוּתֵנוּ, וְשָׂא נֵס לְקַבֵּץ גָּלֻיּוֹתֵינוּ
וְקַבְּצֵנוּ יַחַד מְהֵרָה מֵאַרְבַּע כַּנְפוֹת הָאָרֶץ לְאַרְצֵנוּ.
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יהוה, מְקַבֵּץ נִדְחֵי עַמּוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל.

Teka beShofar gadol lecheruteinu, vesa nes lekabetz galuyoteinu
Vekabtzeinu yachad meheirah me'arba kanfot ha'aretz le'artzeinu.
Baruch atah Adonai, mekabetz nidchei amo Yisrael.

English

Sound the great shofar for our freedom, raise high the banner to gather our exiles, and gather us together speedily, from the four quarters of the earth back to our land. Blessed are You, LORD, who gathers the dispersed of His people Israel.

Restore our judges as at first, and our counselors as at the beginning, and remove from us sorrow and sighing. May You alone, LORD, reign over us soon with loving-kindness and compassion, with righteousness and justice. Blessed are You, LORD, the King who loves righteousness and justice.

For the slanderers let there be no hope, and may all heretics perish in an instant. May all Your people's enemies swiftly be cut down. May You swiftly uproot, crush, cast down the arrogant, and obliterate and bring them low and humble them swiftly in our days. Blessed are You, LORD, who destroys enemies and humbles the arrogant.

Commentary

… were leaders of the people (Rabbi Abraham ben HaRambam). The prayer for the restoration of judges, following the ingathering of exiles, is thus a plea for the return of national sovereignty. וְהָסֵר מִמֶּנּוּ יָגוֹן וַאֲנָחָה Remove from us sorrow and sighing: the plaint of a people who have known the full precariousness of being dependent on the goodwill of others.

They begin with three prayers for political-historical renewal: the return of exiles, the restoration of independence, and an end to the factionalism that caused great damage to the Israelites from the biblical era to the end of the Second Temple period. תְּקַע בְּשׁוֹפָר גָּדוֹל Sound the great shofar: A reference to Isaiah 27:13, "On that day a great shofar will sound." וְשָׂא נֵס Raise high the banner: Isaiah 11:12, "He will raise a banner for the nations and gather the exiles of Israel; He will assemble the scattered people of Judah from the four quarters of the earth."
