creations.1 Lord, all Your creations will give thanks to You, and Your devoted people will bless You. They will speak about the majesty of Your kingdom; they will speak about Your great strength. They will speak about these things to let people know about God’s mighty acts, and the honorable beauty of His kingdom. God, Your kingdom is a kingdom that includes all worlds, and Your rulership over the worlds will continue forever, throughout all future generations. The Lord supports all those who fall,2 and He straightens those who are bent. God, everyone’s eyes look hopefully to You for help, and You give them their food at the proper time. You open Your hand and provide enough food to satisfy the desires of every living being. The Lord is fair in all His ways, and He is kind in everything He does. The Lord is close to all those who call out to Him, and He answers all those who call out to Him truthfully and honestly. He fulfills the desires and needs of those who fear Him; He hears their cries for help, and He saves them. The Lord watches over all those who love Him, and He will destroy all the evil people. My mouth will say the praises of the Lord, and everyone will do the same and bless His holy name forever and ever. We will bless God, now and forever. Praise the Lord.

The following is a song that was composed by King David for the choirmaster of the Levites, to be sung in the Holy Temple. King David tells the Jewish Nation: The Lord should answer your prayers on the day of your difficulty; may the name of the God of Jacob strengthen you.3 May God send you your help4 from the Sanctuary of the Temple and support you from Zion (Jerusalem). May He remember all of your flour-offerings and always accept your burnt-offerings favorably. May He give you what your heart wants. May He fulfill all of your advice; may all the advice that you give to people be good, and may all of your ideas be successful. God, we will rejoice when You save us. In the name of our God, we will raise flags of victory.5 May the Lord fulfill all of your needs, everything you ask for. When all of these good things happen, every Jewish person will say, “Now I know that the Lord has saved His anointed one, King David, by answering him from His holy heavens with the mighty saving powers of His right hand.” Some people rely on chariots to help them win wars, and some people rely on horses, but we, the Jewish Nation, rely only on God. We call out the name of the Lord, our God, for help. Our enemies bend over and fall down, but we rise and stand strong. Save us, Lord; may the King of the universe answer us on the day we call out to Him.

Commentary

1 God’s mercy extends to every single one of His creations, without exception. Unlike humans, who only have mercy on those they can empathize with and relate to, God’s mercy extends even to those who are completely removed from His ways.

2 This verse alludes to the Jewish Nation in exile. Although we have already “fallen” to a low spiritual state due to exile, God supports us and prevents us from falling even further.

3 We specifically mention the “God of Jacob,” as opposed to Abraham or Isaac. Jacob was unique in that he merited seeing Godly revelations at night (Abraham and Isaac only received revelations during the day). Because Jacob was willing to move out of the Holy Land and live in Egypt—a place of exile and spiritual darkness—God wanted to send Jacob the message that even during the night—in the spiritual darkness of exile—God will always be with the Jewish Nation. We therefore invoke Jacob when we ask God to answer us and rescue us from our difficult exile, a time of great darkness.

4 May God give you not only help in the general sense, but also “your” help—tailored specifically for your situation, based on your particular needs.

5 Just as the Maccabees—the leaders of the Jewish army that battled the Syrian-Greeks in the story of Chanukah—proudly fought with the name of God on their flags, so do we declare our pride in God and our commitment to act righteously in His name, under His “flag.”
