Gaze upon the tzitzit as you utter the words וּרְאִיתֶם אֹתוֹ. Upon uttering the word וּזְכַרְתֶּם, call to mind the mitzvah of Shabbat, whose worth equals every other commandment. Pronounce the ז of the words וּזְכַרְתֶּם and תִּזְכְּרוּ distinctly, lest it resemble a ס.</text>

<english>The Lord addressed Moses, charging him to tell the Jewish Nation. God declared: Speak unto the Children of Israel and tell them they must fashion tzitzit for themselves, to be hung upon the four corners of their garments. This duty applies in every season; it is a commandment for all their generations. They shall fasten a blue cord to the tzitzit on each corner. The threads that hang together shall be tzitzit for you. Tzitzit serve as a reminder, and when you look upon these tzitzit, you shall recall all the commandments of the Lord. For the Hebrew word tzitzit has numerical value 600. Join the 8 threads and 5 knots set on every corner, and the sum is 613—the Torah's tally of commandments. Recalling the commandments will lead you to fulfill them. Then you will not wander after your hearts' cravings and the temptations your eyes behold. Pursuit of those cravings causes you to stray from Torah's path. Gaze upon the tzitzit, that you may remember and fulfill all of My commandments. Thereby you will be holy to your God. I am the Lord, your God, Who brought you forth from the land of Egypt so as to be a God for you,1 and so that you might receive Me as your God through observing My commandments. I am the Lord, your God.</english>

<text>1 We may think that, because of our wrongdoings, we are unable to be united with God. This verse reminds us that God took us out of Egypt. In spiritual terms, Egypt symbolizes the impure spirits within us. God removes this impurity so that we may connect to Him and reach higher levels of service.</text>

<type>Commentary</type>
<text>2 These words are connected by the Hebrew letter ו, which symbolizes a flow of energy from above to below. This teaches us that the holiness of the Torah and its commandments, which we have mentioned in the Shema, must be drawn down and revealed in this world through practical action.</text>
