<english>Lord, our God, may Your compassion and Your abundant kindness never, ever depart from us. Hasten and swiftly send upon us blessing and peace. Convey us in peace to the Land of Israel; assemble us from the four corners of the earth. Shatter the yoke of the nations from upon our neck, lifting their restrictions and oppression. Swiftly lead us, standing erect and upright, with pride, toward our land—the Land of Israel. We know that You will accomplish all of this because You are the God Who performs acts of salvation, and You selected us from among all the nations of the earth that utter many languages, to receive the Torah. Our King, at Mount Sinai You drew us near to Your great name (this recalls that we must blot out Amalek, since God's name remains incomplete until Amalek is destroyed) with great love (unlike after fashioning the Golden Calf), so that our mouths might serve to praise You (and not for harmful speech, as Miriam spoke about Moses), to proclaim Your Oneness, and cherish Your name. Blessed are You, Lord, Who with love chooses His people, the Children of Israel.1</english>

While reciting the opening line (שְׁמַע יִשְׂרָאֵל), bear in mind that you are accepting God's sovereignty; while reciting the first paragraph (וְאָהַבְתָּ), bear in mind that you are taking on the commandment to love God; and while reciting the second paragraph (וְהָיָה), bear in mind that you are taking on all of God's commandments. By reciting the third paragraph (וַיֹּאמֶר), you fulfill the commandment of recalling the Exodus from Egypt.</text>

<text>1 There are differing opinions in the Code of Jewish Law as to whether the congregation should respond "Amen" at the end of this blessing. The Chabad custom is for the chazzan to finish the blessing quietly so that it is not heard by the congregation, thereby avoiding the dilemma.</text>
