<english>them, inasmuch as I, the Lord, your God, am a God Who is ardent in visiting retribution upon idolaters, and Who recalls the willful iniquities of fathers and visits chastisement upon their offspring, unto the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me and persist in their fathers' wicked ways. And I am equally ardent to recall and show lovingkindness toward those who love Me and observe My precepts, and recompense them and their progeny for two thousand generations. Moses transmitted the following eight commandments: You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, idly by invoking God's name in a false oath or without pressing cause, for the Lord shall not acquit of transgression anyone who takes His name idly. Keep in mind the Shabbat day all through the week and make ready for it that you may hallow it. Six days during the week you shall labor and accomplish all your tasks, and upon the arrival of the seventh day, it ought to appear to you as though all your labor is finished. The seventh day shall be a sabbath of rest unto the Lord, your God. You shall perform no labor—you, your son, your daughter, your manservant, your maidservant, your beasts, and the convert who abides within your gates, for the Lord fashioned the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all that is in them in six days, and He ceased on the seventh day. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Shabbat day and sanctified it. Revere your father and your mother so that your span of life will be prolonged upon the land which the Lord, your God, is granting you. You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not kidnap. You must not give false testimony against your fellow. You shall not covet or lust after your neighbor's house. Neither shall you covet or lust after your fellow's wife, his manservant, his maidservant, his ox, his donkey, or any other possession of your neighbor.</english>

<english>The entire people were able to perceive the noises and the blazes over the mountain, the blast of the shofar and the mountain in smoke. The people beheld and they quaked from terror, and thus they remained at a distance. Once the people had heard the first two commandments they spoke to Moses, "We dread that if we keep hearing directly from God, we might perish. Instead, you address us and we shall hearken, yet God ought not converse with us face to face." Moses told the people, "Do not be afraid, for God has arrived here so as to exalt you and render you great in the sight of the other nations, and so that you may know there is none other besides Him and that His dread should rest upon you, lest you fall into sin." As the people remained at a distance, Moses approached the dense fog wherein God's Presence abode, that he might hear His word and convey it to the people. The Lord spoke to Moses: Thus shall you say to the Children of Israel, You have beheld with your own eyes that I have addressed you from the heavens and, consequently, you must recognize that no other power exists besides the Lord. You shall not fashion likenesses of anything that ministers to Me, as with the sun, the moon, or the stars, nor shall you fashion for yourselves gods of silver or gold. You shall construct for Me an altar upon the earth, and you shall slay your burnt-offerings and your peace-offerings of your flock and herd beside the altar and thereafter bring them up upon it. In every locale where I will permit My Explicit Name to be uttered—the sites wherein the Tabernacle is to stand and within the Holy Temple—I shall come to you and bless you by causing My Divine Presence to rest upon you. When you will construct for Me an altar of stones, you shall not erect them of stones that were hewn with iron, lest you brandish your sword of iron over it and profane it—for the altar was made to lengthen life, and iron takes life. You shall not employ stairs to ascend onto My altar, so that you need not take large strides and your nakedness will not be uncovered upon it. Instead, construct a ramp to ascend to the altar.</english>
