<english>Moses descended from the mountain and summoned the nation's elders and laid before them every word that the Lord had commanded him to tell them. The whole Jewish Nation answered as one and said, "Everything the Lord spoke, we will perform!" The following morning, on the third day of Sivan, Moses again climbed the mountain and returned the nation's words to the Lord. The Lord said to Moses: Behold, I shall come to you from within the dense cloud, that the people may hear when I speak to you, thus they shall also trust in you and every future prophet, forever. Yet, once the Jewish Nation heard this, they answered, "We wish to hear the commandments straight from God, not by a messenger." And so, the following morning—on the fourth of Sivan—Moses again climbed the mountain and conveyed the nation's words to the Lord. The Lord told Moses: Go toward the nation and ready them by consecrating them today, the fourth, and tomorrow, the fifth of Sivan, and they shall cleanse and purify their clothing that they may be fit to witness the great revelation. They shall be ready for the third day—the sixth of Sivan—for on the third day, the Lord will come down upon Mount Sinai in sight of the whole nation. You shall mark a boundary for the people around Mount Sinai and you will tell them, "Guard yourselves, lest you climb the mountain or even touch its edge, for the mountain will be sacred amid the revelation of the Torah's giving, and whoever touches the mountain shall surely die. No hand may touch it, for if someone touches it—whether man or beast—he shall not live, first he shall be hurled down from the stoning platform and then he shall be stoned. When the ram's horn sounds a long, prolonged blast, they may again climb the mountain."</english>

<english>Moses came down from the mountain and went to the people to recount all that God had told him. He readied the nation, and they washed and purified their clothing. He told the nation, "Stand ready for the third day from now; do not approach a woman." And it came to pass on the third day of preparation, as morning broke, there were peals of thunder and bolts of lightning; an extremely dense cloud lay upon the mountain, and a most mighty blast of a shofar was heard—and the whole nation in the camp quaked. Moses led the people out of the camp toward the Divine Presence of God, which then stood on Mount Sinai, and they stood at the mountain's base. The whole of Mount Sinai was filled with smoke, because the Lord had come down upon it in fire; its smoke ascended like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked greatly. The sound of the shofar grew ever stronger and louder. Once the Jewish Nation heard the first two commandments straight from God, they sensed they could no longer endure so great a revelation and asked Moses to deliver the remaining commandments. God granted him strength so that his voice might be heard by all.</english>

<english>The Divine Presence of the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai to the mountain's summit; the Lord summoned Moses to come up to the mountain's summit and Moses ascended. The Lord told Moses: Go down and warn the nation, lest they break their positions and climb the mountain out of their great longing to come close to God and to behold His revelation, and scores of them shall fall. The noble—the firstborn who were designated to draw near to the Lord and perform His service—must not depend on their high rank; they too shall prepare themselves to remain in their assigned place on the mountain, lest the Lord breach a gap among them and slay them. Moses said to the Lord: I have no need to caution them, for the people already know they may not ascend Mount Sinai, since You have already cautioned us, saying, "Place bounds upon the mountain and make it holy." The Lord told him: Go down and caution them once more. Then you shall go up to the mountain's summit, and Aaron shall ascend with you only as far as the point where he is permitted to go. The noble—the firstborn—shall go up to their assigned area on the mountain, and the rest of the nation, who may not ascend the mountain at all, shall take care not to break their positions to climb toward the Lord upon the mountain, lest the Lord breach and slay them. Moses went down toward the people and spoke to them all that God had told him.</english>
