God wholly purifies us of our sins upon our repentance, yet He does not purify us if we fail to repent. He recalls the willful sins of parents and, if they persist in their parents' ways, chastises their offspring and their offspring's offspring through the third and fourth generations for those sins as well. As Moses perceived the Divine Presence was about to depart, he hastened, bent his head toward the earth, fell prostrate, and spoke: If I have now obtained grace in Your eyes, my Lord, then I pray may the Divine Presence of my Lord proceed in our midst as we travel, since You have pardoned us. And if because they remain a stiff necked people they shall offend before You again, may You pardon our willful and unwitting sins, and establish us as Your eternal nation and portion. God consented and said: Behold I shall establish a covenant to this: In the sight of all your people, I shall produce distinctions unlike any ever formed throughout the earth or among any of the nations—the Divine Presence shall abide solely among the Jewish Nation. Every people among whom you abide shall behold the Lord's work—for it is wondrous—that which I shall now be performing for you.",
