<english>Moses shattered the initial pair of Tablets upon seeing that the Jewish Nation had worshiped the Golden Calf. Once the Lord pardoned them, He said to Moses: Hew for yourself two stone tablets resembling the former, and I shall write upon the Tablets the wording of the Ten Commandments that stood upon the former Tablets, which you broke. Be ready for the mighty disclosure you shall meet in the morning, and at daybreak you shall climb Mount Sinai and stand in the presence of Me there at the summit of the mountain. When you climbed the mountain to obtain the first Tablets, others were permitted to go up with you partway to heighten the pomp. This time, however, they shall be given privately. None, not even Aaron, your brother, shall go up the mountain with you, nor shall any person appear anywhere upon the mountain. Neither sheep nor cattle shall even pasture toward that mountain.</english>

<english>Thus Moses hewed two stone Tablets resembling the former. The following day, Moses rose early in the morning and climbed Mount Sinai as the Lord had charged him, and he bore two stone Tablets in his grasp. The Lord came down in the cloud and stood with him there at the mountain's summit, and Moses proclaimed by invoking the Lord's Name. The Lord moved before Moses and He proclaimed: The Lord is merciful and aids in keeping people from sinning. The Lord is compassionate and aids those who have sinned toward repentance. God is merciful and gracious toward all His creatures, even when they have not earned it. God is slow to anger, granting people an occasion to repent. God displays abundant kindness even toward those lacking merits, and remains true to His word—to recompense those who carry out His will. God keeps and maintains His kindness for two thousand generations—He recalls the merits of our ancestors, and He is gracious to us on their account. God pardons intentional sins. God pardons rebellious sins. God pardons unintentional sins. God wholly purifies us from our sins when we repent, yet He does not cleanse us if we fail to repent. He recalls the willful sins of parents and, if they persist in their parents'</english>

<english>paths, chastises their offspring and children's children unto the third and fourth generations for those sins as well. When Moses perceived the Divine Presence was about to depart, he hastened, bent his head earthward, threw himself down, and said: If now I have found grace in Your eyes, my Lord, then please may the Divine Presence of my Lord journey in our midst as we travel, since You have pardoned us. And if, because they are a people stiff necked they will sin before You again, may You pardon our willful and unwitting sins, and take us as Your everlasting nation and portion. God consented and said: Behold I shall cut a covenant to this: Before all your people, I shall fashion distinctions such as have never been formed throughout all the earth and amid all the nations—the Divine Presence will abide only among the Jewish Nation. All the populace among whom you abide shall behold the Lord's work—for it is awesome—which I am now performing for you. Observe the following precepts that I command you today: behold, when you will enter the Land of Israel, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivvites, and the Jebusites I shall drive out from before you, while the seventh nation, the Girgashites, will depart the land of their own accord. When this occurs, take care, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land to which you go. Do not permit them to remain there, lest it become a perilous snare in your midst, because the folk of these nations will entrap you to forsake the ways of God. Rather, you must raze their altars, smash their monuments, and hew down the trees that they worship. You shall not prostrate yourselves before any other god, for the Lord, Who bears the name "the zealous One," is a zealous God to exact recompense from those who betray Him. I charge you not to make a covenant with the dwellers of the land to permit them to remain, for they will persist in straying after their gods and in sacrificing to their gods, and they will cry out invitations to you to befriend and join them. In time, you will come to partake of their idolatrous sacrifice, until you will eventually take their daughters as brides for your sons. Such daughters will wander after their gods and they will also draw your sons to wander after their gods. As further guard against idolatry, do not fashion any molded or shaped idols for yourself, even should you not mean to worship them.</english>
