Israel's chieftains, the heads of their ancestral tribal houses, drew near to present gifts for the Tabernacle; they were the chiefs of the tribes and they were those who stood beside Moses and Aaron in helping count the Jewish Nation. They presented their gift-offerings before the Lord. These comprised six covered wagons and twelve oxen, one wagon from every two leaders, and an ox from each one of the leaders; they drew near and presented them to the Tabernacle. Moses did not know how to treat this offering, since he would not take it unless so commanded. Therefore, the Lord spoke to Moses and directed him to tell the Jewish Nation what was to be done with the gift-offerings: Accept the offering from them, and it shall be used for the service of the Tent of Meeting—the Tabernacle. Assign them to the Levites; give to each man according to the measure required for his labor. Moses took the covered wagons and the oxen and delivered them to the Levites. Thus did Moses divide the offering. He assigned two of the wagons and four of the oxen to the Levites belonging to Gershon's family, son of Levi, as required for their labor of bearing the Tabernacle's curtains and coverings. He presented four wagons and eight oxen to the Levites belonging to the family of Merari, son of Levi, as required for their labor of bearing the Tabernacle's pillars; the whole lying under the charge of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the High priest. Yet he did not give of the gift to the Levites belonging to the family of Kehat. For the labor laid on them was conveying the holy items including the Holy Ark, which they were to bear only upon their shoulders. The leaders of each tribe presented offerings for the altar's dedication upon the day it was anointed—",
