<english>You shall set aside and present to a Levite a tenth of the whole yield of your plantings, after which you will set aside a further tenth of the yield, which you will carry to Jerusalem. Year by year, you shall render the tenths of the yield that the field brought forth in that year. You will carry the second tenth before the Lord, your God, within Jerusalem, the site wherein He will elect to rest His name. There you will consume a tenth from your grain, your vintage, and your oil. You will likewise carry to Jerusalem the firstlings of your herds and your flock and present them to a Kohen. God bids you to carry the tenth of your yield to Jerusalem so that you may learn from the many Torah sages dwelling there, and that they may stir you to revere the Lord, your God, in every season. If the journey to Jerusalem—the site whereon the Lord, your God, shall elect to set His Name upon it—shall prove overly long and remote for you to be able to bear all of the produce you must bring there, because the Lord, your God, shall bless you with plenty, then you shall convert this produce into money by selling it. Then bind up the silver in your palm, and proceed unto Jerusalem, the site which the Lord, your God, will choose. And in Jerusalem, you will purchase with that silver whatever food your soul may crave—cattle, flock, new wine, aged wine, or whatever other food or drink your soul may crave. You shall consume what you bought there within Jerusalem in the presence of the Lord, your God, and you shall make merry—you and your household. Do not abandon the Levite who resides in your towns, for he holds neither a share in the spoils of war nor heritage of the land together beside you; take care to grant him the foremost tenth of your yield as you have been charged to do. A continual seven-year cycle exists, termed the "shmittah cycle." Should you have neglected to give the tenth of your yield to a Levite and/or to set apart a tenth to be eaten in Jerusalem during years one and two of the shmittah cycle, or during years four and five of that cycle, then at the close of year three and year six, respectively, you shall bring forth every tithe of your produce; you may postpone no longer. Moreover, in years three and six of the cycle, you shall not carry the second tithe unto Jerusalem to consume there; rather, you shall let it remain in your towns and apportion the produce to the poor. The Levite—inasmuch as he holds no share or inheritance of the land together beside you—shall come to gather the foremost tithe of your produce, and the converts, the fatherless, the widow, and every poor</english>

<english>At the close of year seven of the shmittah cycle, you shall grant a remission of every debt and cease to demand repayment. This is the statute of the release: each one who has lent to his fellow and awaits repayment should remit and pardon the debt. He shall not exact the loan from his fellow or from his brother, for this year has been proclaimed a year of remitting debt in the presence of the Lord. You may exact your loan from the gentile, yet any loan payment owed you by your brother—your fellow Jew, your hand shall let go. Yet this may prove needless, for there will be no destitute folk among you, for the Lord will assuredly bless you upon the soil which the Lord, your God, shall grant you as a heritage for you to possess. Destitute souls will be absent among you only if you hearken and keep on hearkening to the utterance of the Lord, your God, taking care to perform all of the precepts that I charge you this day. For the Lord, your God, has blessed you, even as He declared to you: You shall lend unto many peoples, yet you will have no need to borrow from them. You will reign over many nations, and other nations will not reign over you. If, however, you fail to heed God's commandments, and consequently there shall be a destitute person among you, from among your fellow Jewish brethren within one of your towns, in your land that the Lord, your God, grants you, you must not harden your heart nor shut your hand to withhold from aiding your destitute brother. For you shall surely open your bountiful hand to him to give him what he requires, and if he does not wish to accept it as a gift, you shall surely lend him sufficient to meet his needs—whatever he lacks. Take care, lest a wicked thought arise in your heart, saying, "The seventh year in the round, the year of shmittah, draws near, and I shall be bound to release all loans," and you will regard unkindly your destitute brother, and you will refuse to give him a loan fearing you will go unpaid. He will then call out to the Lord against you because you declined to grant him a loan, and it shall stand as a sin for you. Do not withhold your aid; rather, you shall surely give him however much he requires, and do not let your heart feel grudging as you give to him, for it is because you give gladly that the Lord, your God, will go on to bless you in all your labor and in every venture you undertake. For so long as you fail to heed God's commandments, there shall never cease to be destitute people</english>
