<english>offering the sacrifices of the second company, they would open the doors, the second company would depart, and the third company would enter. Each company's procedure was identical. Once every company had departed, the Kohanim would wash the floor of the Temple Courtyard, for it had grown soiled from the blood of the offerings, even if it was Shabbat. How was the washing of the Temple Courtyard performed? There was a watercourse passing through the Temple Courtyard, which would stream out by way of an outlet at the Water Gate. When they wished to rinse the floor of the Temple Courtyard, they would stop up the outlet, making the water rise and fill the channel to its brim along either bank, until it would spill over and inundate the floor along either bank of the channel. The water would collect all the blood and filth upon the floor of the Temple Courtyard into the channel. Thereafter they would open the outlet, and the blood and dirt would stream forth from the Temple Courtyard together with the water, until the pavement was wholly clean and smooth. This cleaning was done to honor the Holy Temple.</english>
