<english>base of the altar. He would hand the vacant vessel rearward to his companion, who would relay it onward to his companion until it reached the front of the row. When a Kohen bore an empty vessel going back up the row for reuse, and the Kohen before him sought to give him a filled vessel destined down the row to be poured upon the altar, he would first receive the filled vessel from his companion and only afterward hand him the vacant vessel. This manner accords with the principle that one may not "pass by" and postpone a mitzvah at hand. To adorn the occasion, every vessel along each row was of one material; rows existed wherein each of the Kohanim bore silver vessels and rows wherein each of the Kohanim bore gold vessels. The vessels lacked flat bottoms lest the Kohanim set them down and overlook them, causing the blood to clot. Were that to occur, the blood would be unfit for pouring upon the altar.</english>
