<text>In the year of the Tabernacle's first dedication, a Nassi (Leader) representing one of Israel's twelve tribes presented a special offering during each of Nissan's opening twelve days in that month. It is the custom to recite the Torah portion that recounts each offering on the day it was brought, then a further prayer. A further Torah portion is recited on the thirteenth day of Nissan, without the additional prayer.</text>

<english>It was upon the day Moses completed raising the Tabernacle; he anointed it with all its vessels and consecrated them, and likewise anointed the altar with all its vessels and consecrated them. Israel's chieftains, heads of the ancestral houses of their tribes, drew near to present gifts unto the Tabernacle; they were the tribal leaders, those stationed with Moses and Aaron to assist numbering the Jewish Nation. They laid their gift-offerings before the Lord. These comprised six wagons, covered, together with twelve oxen, one wagon from each pair of leaders, and one ox from every leader; they drew near and presented them to the Tabernacle. Moses remained uncertain as to how he should treat this offering, since he would not receive it save when commanded so to do. Thus, the Lord addressed Moses and bade him inform the Jewish Nation how the gift-offerings would be used: Accept the offering from them, and let that serve the Tent of Meeting's work—the Tabernacle. You shall assign these to the Levites; allot to each man according to the measure his work required. Moses received those covered wagons and those oxen and assigned them to the Levites. Thus did Moses divide the offering. To the Levites of Gershon's household he delivered two wagons from among them and four oxen the son of Levi, as required for their labor in bearing the Tabernacle's curtains and coverings. Eight oxen and four wagons he assigned to the Levites belonging to Merari's family, the son of Levi, matching what was required for their service in bearing the Tabernacle's pillars; all this was under the charge of Ithamar, Aaron the High priest's son. Yet from the gift he gave nothing to the Levites of Kehat's family. For the labor laid upon them meant bearing the sacred objects, the Holy Ark among them, and these they had to bear solely upon their shoulders. Offerings for the altar's dedication were brought by the tribal leaders on the day of its anointing—Nissan's opening day. Each of the leaders presented his offering at the altar. The Lord spoke unto Moses, concerning these offerings: One chieftain per day, one chieftain per day, through a span of twelve days, shall be the manner they shall present their offering for the altar's dedication. He who presented his offering on the opening day of that dedication was Nachshon, Aminadav's son,</english>
