<english>8 Rabbi Shimon ben Yehudah teaches in the name of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai: Loveliness, might, wealth, honor, wisdom and ripeness, elderhood, and offspring—it befits the righteous to bear these qualities that they may more ably teach concerning God and sanctify His Name, which in turn befits the world.1 As Scripture says in Proverbs: Hoary age is a crown of "beauty," which likewise signifies "riches;" it is found upon the path of righteousness. It likewise says there: The splendor of young men is their "strength," and the splendor of old men is "ripe old age." It likewise says there: Grandchildren form the crown of the aged, and the glory of "children" is their fathers. And Scripture says in Isaiah: Owing to their bitter humiliation and shame, the wicked shall perceive even the moon and sun as darkened when the Lord, God of all creations, reigns on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and "honor" is bestowed before His "mature" and wise elders. Rabbi Shimon ben Menatya teaches: These seven qualities the Sages listed as proper for the righteous—each of them was realized in Rabbi Yehudah Hanassi and his sons, who bore all these qualities.</english>

<text>1 A righteous person might not want the qualities mentioned here, because they may distract him from Torah study. For this reason they are referred to as "beauty"—something that has no benefit for the person himself, but is valuable to people who see him. The righteous person must accept these qualities because they are beneficial to the world at large.</text>

<text>3 Rabbi Yosei is hinting at the advantage of learning Torah over fulfilling its commandments. Many commandments require something physical (symbolized here by "gold and silver") with which to fulfill them. Since one is ultimately dependent on God for physical things, one may not always be able to fulfill certain commandments. The Torah, however, is given entirely to a person without any need for physicality. Nothing can prevent him from studying it.</text>
