<english>3 One who studies even one chapter, one law, one verse, one saying, or merely one letter of Torah from a companion is bound to honor him.1 For we see this with David, king of Israel—who acquired merely two lessons from Achitofel2—to study in company rather than in solitude, and to go forth with companions and zeal when setting out to study—and he named him his master, his guide, and his instructor. As King David addresses Achitofel in Psalms: You stand as one equal to me; you remain my guide and my instructor. Surely this yields a clear inference: If David, Israel's king, took only two lessons from Achitofel, and yet named him his master, his guide, and his instructor, then when a common person studies even one chapter, one law, one verse, one saying, or merely one letter of Torah from a companion, how much more must he honor him. Honor is due only for Torah. As Scripture says in Proverbs: The Sages shall inherit honor; the whole-hearted shall inherit good. And Torah alone is truly good. As Scripture says in</english>

<english>6 Torah exceeds the station of Kohen or king, because being a king entails thirty special rights and duties, among them the ban on another occupying his seat or mounting his horse; being a Kohen entails twenty-four offerings that must be presented to Kohanim, among them the earliest fruits, challah, and the terumah gift. <text>2 Why does the Braita use the word "only" in reference to learning from Achitofel, and not later in reference to learning from anyone? Something learned "מֵחֲבֵרוֹ"—from a fellow Jew—grows and develops with you. Things learned from a wicked person (such as Achitofel) do not grow and develop; you are only left with the exact thing that you learned.</text>

<text>3 An alternative interpretation: If a person finds himself in a challenging situation—even lacking all but bare physical necessities—he should not despair. Instead he should resolve to work hard in Torah and remind himself that: 1) Torah is greater than all worldly pleasures, and 2) He will be compensated in the World to Come.</text>
