<english>1 The Sages taught the following sayings in Hebrew, the Mishnah's language. Blessed is God, Who selected the Sages and their lessons. Rabbi Meir says: Whoever occupies himself in Torah1 study for its own sake—because it is a commandment—will merit many good things. Beyond that, even the making of the whole world is justified for his sake alone. Among the many things he merits: He is termed a "friend" and "beloved" of God. He cherishes God and cherishes God's creatures. He gladdens God and gladdens humankind.2 The Torah clothes and envelops him with humility and awe of God. It readies him to be righteous, devoted to God, upright, and trusted. It also keeps him far from sin and draws him near to merit. People delight in his sound counsel, wisdom, insight, and might. As Scripture says in Proverbs: Counsel and wisdom belong to me, says the Torah. I am understanding; might is mine. The Torah</english>

<english>2 Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi says: Each and every day, a heavenly voice that the soul hears issues from Mount Horeb (Mount Sinai). It proclaims and says, "Alas for those who slight the Torah by failing to learn with zeal." They deserve pity, for anyone who does not zealously devote himself to Torah is termed "shamed." As Scripture says in Proverbs: A beautiful woman (the Torah) lacking flavor (without excitement and pleasure) resembles a golden ring in a pig's snout. Torah must be "flavorful" and stirring. A further benefit of occupying oneself with Torah, as it says in the Torah: The Tablets are the work of God, and the writing is the writing of God, carved upon the Tablets. Do not read the word as "charut" (engraved) but rather as "cherut" (freedom), for no person is free from social pressures and able to attain his full potential save one who occupies himself with Torah study. Whoever occupies himself with Torah study becomes elevated and great. As it says in the Torah: While listing the stations the Jewish Nation passed through in the wilderness, Scripture records: the Jewish Nation journeyed from Mattanah to Nachaliel, and from Nachaliel to Bamot. The Sages unfold the deeper sense of this verse thus: When someone employs the Mattanah (gift) of Torah, God becomes his Nachaliel (inheritance), and this makes him Bamot (elevated).</english>

<text>1 Alternatively, "conduct business in Torah." This means that we should use business ethics to enhance the honor of the Torah. Just as confident business-people spend much time and energy finding "customers," we must similarly find "customers" with whom to learn Torah. This will bring honor to the Torah, because it will show that we recognize its great value and the need to share it with others.</text>

<text>2 When we love another person, they do not necessarily feel it or gain anything from it. For this reason, we are taught that loving people is not enough; we must also make them "happy." This means that our love must make people happy—we must make sure that it has a positive effect on them.</text>
