<english>owing to upheavals, wherein certain folk starve and others are sated. 2. If they all resolved not to tithe, a famine of drought arrives, and rain will prove insufficient. 3. If they further resolved not to separate challah while baking bread, a famine of destruction arrives, wherein rain ceases, and even rivers and lakes are dried out. 4. Deadly plagues arrive in the world when people commit sins that according to Torah law call for the death penalty from God, and the Jewish court of law is denied the duty of carrying it out—God sends a plague in its place. Plagues likewise arrive in the world when statutes covering produce raised in the seventh (Sabbatical) year go unheeded. 5. The sword of war arrives upon the world from the anguish judges inflict by postponing proclamation of a verdict; because of judges perverting a verdict; and because of people who expound and teach Torah matters not in keeping with the Jewish law.1</english>

<english>6. Wild beasts arrive in the world on account of needless oaths that people swear and because of people desecrating God's Name. 7. Exile arrives in the world on account of idol-worship,2 immorality, murder, and for refusing the earth its rest through the Sabbatical year. At four junctures in each seven-year Sabbatical cycle, deadly plagues swell: within the fourth year, within the seventh year, within the year after the seventh year, and every year after Sukkot's Festival concludes. <text>3 Speech is as important as action when it comes to giving charity. Even a person who has nothing to give to the poor but comforts them with words, by saying, "What's mine is yours," is considered a chassid (devoted person). On the other hand, one who gives charity but embarrasses the recipient by saying, "What's yours is mine" is considered wicked.</text>
