<english>13 Rabbi Shimon says: Be exceedingly mindful concerning reciting the Shema and praying at the appointed hour. When you pray, do not render your prayer a thing you perform from habit; rather, fashion it as a heartfelt plea and a petition for mercy before God,1 Who is compassionate and benevolent. As it says in the book of Joel: God is gracious and merciful; He is slow to anger and possesses abundant kindness, and He is forbearing with chastisements. Do not regard yourself as wicked, for that may lead you to cease caring about sins, or leave you downcast.</english>

<english>1 Akavya ben Mahalalel says: Look upon and ponder these three things at all times,3 and you shall not come to transgression: Know whence you came, whither you are bound, and before Whom you must at last render justification and a detailed account of all that you did throughout your lifetime. The mishnah clarifies: Whence did you come? The body starts its growth from a spoiled drop of fluid in the mother's womb. Whither are you bound? You will at last die and descend to a grave, a place that is filled with dust, worms, and maggots. Before Whom will you render a detailed account? Before the exalted King of all kings, the Holy One, blessed be He.</english>

<text>2 This mishnah even provides a lesson for someone who is fully utilizing his time, doing his work, and is not lazy. The only thing such a person is missing is not forcing himself to go beyond his natural limits. To stretch one's limit is called "much work," and the "workers are lazy" in this regard.</text>

<text>3 By looking at "three things" you will not do a sin. In addition to the two obvious components of your life—God and yourself—there is a third component: a world that must be elevated. Your soul came down to this world for a purpose—to reveal God's holiness in it. If you keep this in mind, you will not come to sin.</text>
