<english>7 Hillel would often say: Do not indulge in excessive eating, for the more flesh a person's body bears, the more food there will be for the worms in the grave. The more possessions a man holds, the more worry is his. The more wives a man has, the more jealousy he stirs among them, and they might even practice witchcraft to win the husband's attention. The more maids a man has, the more immorality fills the house. The more servants a man has, the more theft fills the house. Yet the more Torah a man learns, the more life is his. The more a man sits and studies, the more wisdom is his. The more counsel a man receives from Torah scholars, the more he understands matters unaided. The more charity a man gives, the more blessings of peace he brings about. <english>9 Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai had five distinguished disciples. Namely: Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenus, then Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya, then Rabbi Yosei the Kohen, then Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel, and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach. He would recount their praiseworthy traits as follows: Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenus is like a plastered cistern that loses not a drop of water, for he forgets nothing. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya—his mother is blessed that she bore such a son.1 Rabbi Yosei the Kohen is a chassid—he goes beyond what the law requires. Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel is one who fears sin. Rabbi Elazar ben Arach is like a spring that issues with ever-growing force, for he constantly adds to his wisdom. Rabban Yochanan would often say: If all the learning of the Jewish Nation's Sages lay on one side of a scale, and the knowledge of Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenus lay on the other side, his knowledge would tip the balance against them all.2 Abba Shaul says another version of this remark in Rabban Yochanan's name: If all the learning of the Jewish Nation's Sages lay on one side of a scale, together with the learning of Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkenus, and the insight of Rabbi Elazar ben Arach lay on the other side, his wisdom would tip the balance against them all.</english>

<text>1 Everyone is born with great potential, but it requires hard work to actualize it. Rabbi Yehoshua didn't let anything remain in potential; he used all of his potential from birth to the fullest extent.</text>

<text>2 Even though Abba Shaul was blessed with a great memory, he says that Rabbi Elazar—who was always expanding his knowledge (not just remembering it)—was greater. This teaches us not to be satisfied with only doing what we are naturally good at. We must strive to develop qualities that are not yet part of our nature.</text>
