<english>Abaye1 used to list the order of the daily service within the Temple. His catalogue was based on the sequence that the disciples of the academy had received from their masters and according to the view of the Sage Abba Shaul, who holds that every lamp of the menorah was cleaned before the incense was burned. The list ran thus: The large pile of wood upon the altar, on which they would set offerings, was readied and arrayed before the second, lesser pile of wood that served for producing coals for burning incense. The second pile was arrayed before the two logs of wood were set upon the large pile noted above. Arranging the two logs of wood occurred before removing the ashes from the inner altar employed for burning incense. Removing the ashes from the inner altar occurred before cleansing the opening five of the menorah's lights. Cleansing the opening five of the menorah's lights came before the sprinkling of the blood of the daily burnt-offering upon the outer altar. Casting the blood of the daily burnt-offering upon the outer altar came before the cleansing of the remaining two lamps of the menorah. Cleansing the remaining two lamps of the menorah occurred before burning the incense. Offering the incense upon the inner altar took place before the placing of the limbs of the daily burnt-offering upon the outer altar. Setting the limbs of the daily burnt-offering upon the outer altar preceded the bringing of the flour-offering that accompanied the daily burnt-offering. That flour-offering which went with the daily burnt-offering was offered ahead of the High Priest's daily offering of pancakes (fried dough). Those pancakes were offered ahead of pouring the wine that went with the daily burnt-offering. The wine for the daily burnt-offering was poured ahead of bringing the Musaf-offerings—the extra sacrifices presented on Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh, and festivals. The Shabbat Musaf-offerings preceded the offering on the altar of the two spoons of frankincense that had been taken from the shulchan. The spoons of frankincense went on the altar before the daily burnt-offering presented in the late afternoon. It is known that the afternoon's daily burnt-offering stood as the final offering, because it says in the Torah: The Kohen would set the daily burnt-offering of the morning upon the wood-stack on the altar and thereafter burn the fats of the peace-offering upon it. Once that was done, all remaining offerings could be completed,2 provided they were presented prior to the afternoon burnt-offering (after which nothing further could be offered throughout the remainder of the day).</english>

<text>1 Although Jewish law does not generally follow the opinion of Abaye, we nevertheless read his order of service. In addition to having the merit of reciting a passage of Talmud, we read this excerpt to remind ourselves that even a disputed opinion in Torah is part of Torah. The Talmud relates that a heavenly voice once declared that the contrary opinions of Shamai and Hillel are “both words of the living God.” When Moses asked God whose opinion will be followed in practice, God replied that the matter will be determined by the sages of each generation. We recite these words of Abaye, although disputed, to emphasize that the entire Torah is the “word of the living God.”</text>

<text>2 The sages of the Mishnah taught that the blessings that God gives to the Jewish Nation can only materialize if there is peace. This is hinted at in the order of the Temple service, which could only be “completed” after the burning of the fats of the peace-offering—so called because it brought peace to the world. It was this service that enabled the blessings associated with all the other Temple offerings to materialize and become complete.</text>
