Namely: nine kabin (nearly 3½ gallons) of lye from Karshinah and three se’in plus three kabin (nearly 7¾ gallons) of wine from Cyprus. Should Cyprus wine prove unobtainable, aged white wine was brought and employed in its place. <english>Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel states: The balm named earlier is merely the sap that issues from balsam trees. The lye from Karshinah was employed in scouring the onycha, to render it attractive. Wine of Cyprus was employed to steep the onycha, so that it might have a strong odor. Though water drawn from Raglayim would be better than Cyprus wine for giving the onycha a potent odor, water of Raglayim is not brought into the Holy Temple inasmuch as it is not respectful.</english>

<english>It is taught: Rabbi Nattan states: While the Kohen was grinding the incense, he would declare, “Grind it thin; grind it thin!” for the voice is good for the incense.2 When only half of those 368 manim of incense was ground in due ratios, it is kosher, yet we have not learned whether the incense remains kosher should only a third or a quarter of the 368 manim have been ground. Rabbi Yehudah said: The governing principle is as follows: If the Kohen ground and mixed each ingredient for the incense according to its proper measure, the incense is kosher, even should only half the quantity of each ingredient have been prepared. Yet if he omitted even a single one of its eleven ingredients, he would merit the death penalty.</english>

<english>It is taught: Bar Kapara states: Whenever the High Priest, on Yom Kippur, removed two handfuls from the three surplus maneh, a remainder of incense was invariably left. Once every sixty or seventy years, according to how large the High Priests’ hands were, the leftover incense would add up to 184 manim, amounting to half of a year’s measure of incense. At that point, the Kohanim needed only to prepare a further 184 manim for that year’s incense. Bar Kapara further taught: If a few drops of honey were placed into the incense, so sweet would its fragrance have been that no person could hold themselves in check from the beautiful smell. Why, then, did they refrain from putting honey into the incense? Because the Torah says: You shall not bring any leaven or honey3 as a fire-offering to the Lord.</english>

<text>1 The pleasant aroma of the incense helped remove the spiritual “bad smell” of the evil inclination. This explains why no specific measure was given for the smoke-raising herb, and merely a “small amount” was sufficient. A person’s evil inclination is conquered by the essence of his soul, which is beyond the limitations of space and cannot be measured.</text>

<text>2 The rhythm of the Kohen’s voice would assist him in crushing the spices evenly and consistently, with repetitive motions. Alternatively, the Kohen spoke so that his breath would blow any floating particles back toward the spice bowl.</text>

<text>3 The Rambam writes that a person should always follow the middle path of a characteristic. If he finds himself being too extreme about something he should move to the opposite extreme until he settles at a middle path. “Leaven” and “honey” represent two opposite extremes – one is sour, the other is sweet. This verse teaches us that extremes have no place in the service of God.</text>
