<english>Our Rabbis taught: How did they prepare the incense? Incense made for a single year contained 368 manim. Each maneh had a weight of about one pound. Over the course of the year, 365 of the 368 manim were consumed, matching the count of days in a solar year. A single maneh was consumed each day of the year; one half was offered in the morning, and the remaining half was offered in the afternoon. Thus 365 of the 368 manim were consumed in the course of the year, with three manim remaining. The High Priest would take two handfuls from these three manim into the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur. Though these three manim had already been ground, a Kohen would return them to the grinder on the eve of Yom Kippur, and mill them once more with great thoroughness so as to produce an exceedingly fine powder. The incense comprised eleven kinds of spices. They are these: 1. balm, 2. onycha, 3. galbanum, 4. frankincense;each of these four spices amounted to seventy maneh, 280 maneh in all; 5. myrrh, 6. cassia, 7. spike-nard, 8. saffron; each of those four spices had a weight of</english>

<text>1 The Hebrew word for "incense" (קטרת) is also the Aramaic word for "knot," indicating that one who offered incense in the Temple formed a special bond with God that could never be broken—a bond superior even to that achieved through other offerings in the Temple.</text>
