<english>and his sons concerning the morning clearing of ashes from the altar. Say to them: This is the statute that governs the burnt-offering:1 The burnt-offering is to rest upon the altar's wood through the night, until dawn, that it may burn as it ought. The altar's fire is to stay alight without pause. The Kohen shall don his linen garments and clothe his flesh with linen trousers. Thereafter, with a dedicated shovel, he is to clear a portion of the leftover ashes of the burnt-offering consumed by the altar's flame, and place it beside the altar east of its ramp. A second heap of ashes lies at the altar's midpoint. Should that heap grow excessive, a Kohen is to remove his distinctive linen garments, lest they be soiled, and he is to don other garments of lesser sanctity than the linen. He then is to clear that greater heap of ashes from the altar's midst and carry it to a pure site, beyond the three camps of the Jewish Nation. The altar's fire must continually stay alight; it must not be extinguished. The Kohen shall feed wood to the fire each morning. Upon this wood he is to arrange the burnt-offering, and likewise burn the fat of the peace-offering upon it. The fire must remain continually alight upon the altar;2 it must not be extinguished.3</english>

<text>1 An alternative, more literal translation: "This is the Torah of elevation." This verse hints at the fact that Torah study elevates and improves our spiritual condition to the point where we can overcome our darkest forces, including our entire evil inclination—in the words of this verse: "the entire night."</text>

<text>2 The Temple altar symbolizes a person's heart, the "seat" of one's love for God. Just as the fire on the altar had to burn constantly, our hearts must also be burning constantly with love for God.</text>

<text>3 The phrase "it must not go out" can be interpreted as follows: Everything that is "not"—everything that is negative and evil in the world—must "go out" and be destroyed. We can achieve this by serving God with fiery passion and excitement.</text>

<text>4 The very first daily burnt-offering was sacrificed on Mount Sinai, on the day before the giving of the Torah. The purpose of the giving of the Torah was to make the physical world holy. In preparation for this, a physical animal was transformed into a holy sacrifice.</text>
