<english>of His commandments, even should you stand to lose money. These words of Torah, which I command you to perform today and every day, must remain always new and fresh to you, and they must be engraved on your heart; you must always be thinking about them. You should teach Torah to your children and disciples until they have mastered it enough to answer any question concerning it. You should occupy yourself with the words of Torah and speak them at every chance: when you sit in your house, when you go on the way, when you lie down by night, and when you get up at dawn. These words, the words of Shema, are to be written in tefillin. You should tie the hand-tefillin on your arm as a sign to recall God, and the head-tefillin should be placed on your head, above the area between your eyes. You should write these words of the Shema on mezuzot, which you should affix on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.</english>

<english>You are the Lord, the God Who holds sway over heaven, earth, and the loftiest heavens. You were truly the first to be, even prior to the world's creation, and You shall be the last to remain. There is no other god besides You. Assemble together those of the Jewish Nation who hope for Your aid and are scattered throughout the earth. Lead them from the four corners of the earth unto the Land of Israel. Let every people on earth recognize and know that You are the sole God, Who holds sway over every kingdom of the earth. You formed the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all that is within them. Which of Your works in the upper or lower worlds can ask of You, "What are You doing?" or "What are You making?" None may ask why You act as You do, for none grasp Your ways. Our Father in heaven, Who lives forever, deal graciously and kindly with us, even should we be unworthy, for the sake of Your great, mighty, and awesome name, by which we are called and known. Show us kindness so that every nation will perceive that You are indeed a great, strong, and awesome God. Lord, our God, bring to pass the vow You made to us through Zephaniah, Your prophet, as it is written in Scripture: At that hour of the Redemption, I will bring you home to the Land of Israel, and at that hour I will gather you as one. I will make you renowned and praised among all the nations of the world when I restore all your captives; when I lead them out of exile to the Land of Israel before your eyes. Thus said the Lord.</english>

<text>1 Here we declare our absolute belief that God has never changed—that He is alone and One today, just as He was before He created the universe. The existence of earthly creations does not affect this in any way, because earthly creations are considered nothingness in comparison to the infinite God.</text>

<text>2 By saying this blessing, we are asking God to help us fulfill what we are instructed to do in the Shema: to serve Him with "all our souls," which means to sacrifice our lives for Him if we have the opportunity to do so. The Zohar explains that merely being willing to do so is considered as meritorious as actually doing so.</text>
