<english>What may we utter while standing in Your presence, Lord, our God and the God of our fathers? Is it not so that all the mighty ones upon earth are as naught before You, and that the renowned ones upon earth are of no worth—as though they had never been? Is it not so that learned ones are as those who possess no wisdom, and men of vast insight stand as though they possess no comprehension? For, in truth, most of what they do is naught; the span of their days holds no worth for You, for they occupy themselves with vain, hollow matters, and man's superiority over beast1 does not exist.2 For all things of this earth are vanity, save for the unsullied soul belonging to a human being, which in due time must render a full account of all it has done upon this earth when it arrives before Your Throne of Glory. Every people upon earth stands as naught in Your sight. As Isaiah the prophet declared: Truly, the nations resemble a droplet remaining from the base of a pail of water, which none trouble themselves to gather. They are regarded as vain as the dust upon balances, which none trouble themselves to brush away before weighing an item. Truly, all the isles of the sea are as blown dust to God.</english>

<text>1 An alternative translation: "The improvement of man comes from the animal." The key to self-improvement lies in the way we deal with our animal instinct. If we make a conscious effort to subdue it, we will reach a higher level of Divine service.</text>

<text>2 When we declare that "man" has no advantage over animals, we are referring only to the physical body of man. The soul that we have and the spiritual connection that we have with God, indeed gives us an advantage over animals. For this reason we add in the following paragraph, "However, we are Your nation, the children of Abraham"—to teach us that it is by doing what God wants, in the tradition of our forefathers, that we strengthen our connection to God and elevate ourselves to a level higher than animals.</text>

<text>3 This can be interpreted as both a command and a promise: we are commanded to love God on a basic level, and we are promised that we will love Him on a deeper, more profound level. When we achieve a feeling of basic love for God by contemplating His Oneness and greatness, He responds by arousing this deeper love within us.</text>
