Praise the Lord; Sing unto our God for He is good. It is proper to praise Him for He is pleasant. Builder of Jerusalem is the Lord. God will assemble those of the Children of Israel, who are scattered over far lands, and He shall bring them in unto Jerusalem once it is rebuilt. He mends the broken-hearted people,1 and He binds up their wounds. The number of stars He counts in the heavens and calls each one by a name,2 even those farthest away. Likewise, He numbers and recalls even the farthest Jewish person. Our Master, God, can do all this for He is great and most mighty, and His understanding is unbounded. The Lord uplifts humble people, and He casts wicked people down to the dust. Lift voices unto the Lord in thanks, and make music on a harp for our God.</english>

יְדָעוּם, הַלְלוּיָהּ:7</hebrew>
<english>With clouds He covers the heaven. Rain He readies for the earth and causes grass to sprout upon the mountains. By this means, He supplies food for animals3 dwelling on mountains, which would otherwise find nothing to eat. God even nourishes young, helpless ravens abandoned by their parents, when they cry out for food. He does not desire those who depend on the might of a horse, instead of depending on Him, to deliver them in battle. He likewise does not want one who depends on the might of his legs. The Lord desires those who fear Him,4 people who long for His kindness and put trust in Him.5 Give thanks to the Lord, dwellers in the rebuilt Jerusalem. Laud your God, O people of Zion (Jerusalem), for He has fortified the bolts of your cities' gates and shielded you from your foes. He has blessed your children with success, those who dwell in your midst. He makes certain there is peace and security within your borders. He tends you and grants you the finest wheat to sate you. Forth He sends His word to govern the weather on Earth; the rain races so quickly to obey His command. Snow He gives us, as white as wool. He strews frost like ashes over the earth on cold mornings. He hurls His ice in shards, making hail. Who can endure the chill that God can create? Yet the moment He wishes, He sends His command and all the ice thaws, and He blows His warm wind and the waters stream once more. Praise God for He made Himself known and declared His words of Torah unto the Children of Jacob. He gave His commandments, some explained and some unexplained, unto the Children of Israel. For no other nation did He do this;6 they know not the commandments of His Torah. For granting us the wondrous gift of Torah, thank and praise the Lord.7</english>

<text>4 The “horse” in this verse symbolizes words of prayer. Just as a horse transports things from one place to another, so do words of prayer carry a person to a higher level of emotional attachment to God. However, God is not content with these emotions, as powerful as they may be, because they are carried by a “horse”—they come from an external source (prayer). God wants our emotions to be internal—He desires people who “fear Him” innately, without the dependence on prayer.</text>

<text>5 This refers to those who do not seek any personal gain from God. Rather, they await the revelation of God’s kindness only so that God’s greatness should be made known.</text>

<text>6 The written Torah is written and available “for all nations” to read, and it may therefore be misinterpreted by them. The Oral Torah, on the other hand, is spoken only by the Jewish Nation; they are God’s “words” that are exclusively for the descendants of “Jacob” and nobody else.</text>

<text>7 An alternative interpretation of these two verses: Only one who speaks God’s “words to Jacob” (i.e. words of Torah), and does not speak the words of “any other nation” (i.e. mundane, worldly issues), will be able to “praise the Lord” properly.</text>
