<english>שִׁיר What follows is a song fashioned to be chanted upon the steps of the Holy Temple. I raise my gaze toward the mountains, and I inquire: From where shall my help arrive? My help shall arrive from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to falter. Your Watchman never dozes and will continually keep you. Indeed, God, the Watchman of the Children of Israel, neither dozes nor sleeps. The Lord is your sentry; the Lord is your sheltering shade, Who remains ever at your right hand to keep you from harm. The heat of the sun shall not strike you by day; nor shall the chill of the night—when the moon gleams. The Lord will keep you from every evil; He will keep your soul. <english>festivals. That so great a throng could be housed at ease in Jerusalem is evidence for the Children of Israel that God’s Divine Presence abides there. This is cause to offer thanks to the Lord’s name. The Divine Presence abode in Jerusalem, because the seats of justice—where the highest court would sit—stood there, together with the thrones of the House of David, where the Jewish kings—King David’s royal descendants—would sit. Pray for Jerusalem’s peace. Jerusalem—may peace rest upon those who love you. Jerusalem, may peace reign within your walls and calmness within your palaces.
