<english>The eyes of the Lord are fixed toward the righteous,1 those who shun evil and practice good. Should any affliction befall them, God turns His ears toward their cry and heeds them. The anger of the Lord is aimed toward those who do evil, to remove every memory of them from earth. Yet once they cry out in repentance, the Lord hears them and delivers them from every one of their afflictions. The Lord is near to the broken-hearted as they repent; He delivers those who have turned back with a crushed and humble spirit. Though a righteous person has many troubles, he need not fear, for the Lord delivers him from them all. God guards every one of the righteous person's bones; not even one of them is shattered. Evil deeds bring death upon the wicked; foes of the righteous stand condemned. The Lord ransoms the soul of His servants and delivers them from the malicious designs of the wicked. All who take refuge in God shall not be doomed.</english>

<english>passed, like one third of the night. So then, the brief flow of our lives is as slight as a dream once the dreamer has risen from his sleep. Only in the morning—during the early years of our lives—are we vigorous and renewed, as grass that springs forth anew. A youth is renewed like grass in the morning that sprouts and flowers once more. An aged person is frail, like grass in the evening that withers and dries up. God, Your anger consumes us and Your rage lays us waste. You have arrayed before You all our willful sins; even our hidden, unwitting sins stand exposed before the light of Your face.4 All our days have vanished because of Your anger, God; by sinning we have made our years slip by like a brief, fading tone. The span of years allotted us is usually seventy,5 and if we possess great strength we may reach eighty years of age. Most of the years of our lives are filled with toil and futility; they pass by swiftly and fly away. Who knows how to guard himself from the force of Your anger, God? No one does! Your anger toward someone accords with his fear of You.6 The more a person stands in fear of You, the less he will do to provoke You. Teach us how to number our days—how to hold them dear and use them well, and this will bring us to possess a wise heart—to grasp the purpose of life. Return to us, Lord. How long shall Your anger toward us endure? Show mercy to the Jewish Nation, Your servants. Satisfy us in the morning</english>

<text>1 In the previous paragraph we say, "The eye of the Lord is turned toward those who fear Him," but here we say "His eyes (plural) are turned toward the righteous." Righteous people are closer to God than those who serve Him merely out of fear; they therefore merit to be gazed upon by God with two eyes.</text>

<text>2 The Hebrew word for "prayer," תְּפִלָּה, can also be translated as "connection." This verse teaches us that Jews of every generation can "connect" to God by following the ways of their righteous leaders—those who represent the "spirit of Moses." By doing so, every person has the potential to be elevated to the level of "man of God"—the level of Moses himself.</text>

<text>3 The word תָּשֵׁב (return) has the same letters as the word שַׁבָּת. Enosh and his generation were the first to worship idols. This verse hints to that which the Gemara says, that even those who have committed the most severe sins, as Enosh and his generation did, can "return" to God and be forgiven if they keep "Shabbat" properly.</text>

<text>4 We ask that God help us transform any bad deeds into good—so they can be "before God," and all darkness caused by sins into positive "light."</text>

<text>5 The word בָהֶם (literally "in them") refers to the good inclination and the evil inclination. The number of years of life given to a person is based on how much time is required to conquer and transform the evil inclination.</text>

<text>6 An alternative translation: "Your distress corresponds to your fear." This is a subtle hint to remind us that we should not fear God only when we are experiencing times of "distress," when we need Him. We must fear him when we are comfortable and happy, too.</text>
