<english>Just as Chessed (kindness), Gevurah (severity), Tiferet (beauty)—along with Netzach (victory), Hod (splendor), and Yesod (foundation), those six divine attributes—unite above as one, so does she—Malchut (kingship), that divine attribute—unite amid the lower worlds in a profound, mysterious1 plane of God's Oneness, so that it can be with the remaining divine attributes above—for Malchut's cohesion amid the lower worlds corresponds unto the unity of those six divine attributes on high. God, the Holy One, blessed be He, Who is One on high, sits not upon His throne of glory until Malchut enters this hidden plane of unity along with the remaining attributes, resembling God's unity. Such oneness of Malchut together with the remaining divine attributes corresponds to the Oneness of God. As we have established and set forth elsewhere in Zohar, this is the deeper sense of the phrase: The Lord is One, while the divine attributes, termed "His Name", stand united as one.</english>

<english>Malchut's unity, noted above, constitutes the mystery of Shabbat: On Shabbat, she—Malchut, the divine attribute—is united in that mysterious plane of God's Oneness, so that the mysterious Oneness of God may rest on her. This takes place at the prayer of Maariv on the evening of Shabbat, for then God's holy Throne of Glory, answering to Malchut, the divine attribute, likewise becomes united with God's mysterious Oneness, prepared for the holy King above, God, to rest on it. As Shabbat arrives, Malchut, the divine attribute, is joined to God's Oneness and is parted from the "other side," where wickedness dwells, and every severe judgment is taken from her. She abides in oneness with God's sacred light, crowning herself with many crowns for the holy King, God. Thereafter every force of wrath and every wicked foe flees and is taken from her, and apart from the force of God's holiness, no further force holds sway in any of the worlds. A celestial radiance lights her face. She crowns herself with the holy people here below upon earth, and those holy people themselves receive crowns of new souls. Maariv's prayer then opens, blessing her in gladness and with radiant faces.</english>

<english>The chazzan offers blessing to God, saying: Let us now bless the Lord, who is Blessed. He employs the word "אֶת," (the) in particular, for it points to Shabbat evening. The congregation then replies: Blessed is the Lord, Who is blessed. This clause points to Yesod (foundation), the divine attribute, which draws forth the blessings from God, the wellspring of all life, and is the site from which the streams that "water" all things in the world and sustain them are drawn, then conveyed to Malchut (kingship). Because Yesod is the source whence Malchut obtains its blessing, and is the mystery of "the sign of the everlasting covenant"—the circumcision, it is termed "the blessed," for it is like the source of water that supplies the well—Malchut. Inasmuch as these blessings both arrive at and issue from there, they shall all endure forever. Hence the congregation replies: Blessed is the Lord, Who is blessed, forever and ever.</english>

<text>1 This passage of kabbalah—an excerpt from the Zohar—describes the way God is one and united with all of His creations—even the physical creations on earth "below," which appear to be independent and separate from Him. This unity is described as רָזָא, "mysterious," because it is something that is not apparent to us at first glance—we must dig deep and search for it in order to recognize it. Furthermore, the numerical value of the Hebrew root of this word (רז) is 207—the same numerical value as the word אוֹר, "light." In order to reveal God's oneness, we must bring His "light" into the world by doing good deeds.</text>
