<english>מִזְמוֹר What follows is a musical prayer for the Levites to chant in the Holy Temple on the day of Shabbat.1 It is fitting to laud You, Lord, and to chant unto Your name, most high God. Fitting is it to declare Your kindness at dawn and Your trustworthiness through the nights.2 I shall laud You upon a ten-stringed instrument and upon a lyre, and with singing joined by a harp. For You, Lord, have gladdened me through Your miraculous deeds. I chant with joy as I behold the great acts that Your hands do. Lord, how vast are the works You perform! Your thoughts are exceedingly deep. A brutish man cannot know, and a foolish person cannot grasp what follows: why it is that the wicked spring up and flourish like grass, and all who work evil bloom, solely to be destroyed afterward, forever. Lord, You stand exalted forever. Indeed, Lord, Your foes—indeed, Your foes—shall be destroyed. All those who sin shall be scattered and wiped out. Yet the righteous may declare, You have increased my strength; You have rendered me as strong as a wild ox. You have granted me many luxuries; I am even anointed with fresh oil. My eyes have seen the ruin of my foes who would watch me. My ears have heard the ruin of the evildoers who have risen up against me.</english>

<text>1 The word "Shabbat" has two seemingly contradictory meanings, "resting" and "destroying." In fact, both of these translations go hand in hand: When we rest on Shabbat, we bring additional revelations of Godliness, which destroy the world's unholy forces.</text>

<text>2 "The morning" refers to the times when our minds are fresh and clear—when we can understand God's greatness. At those times, we are naturally inclined to serve God with love and kindness. At "night," however, when our minds are "dark" and we cannot understand God's ways, we must serve Him with simple "faith."</text>
