And since You dwell within these attributes, anyone who divides any of these ten attributes from each other—anyone who regards the attributes as distinct entities—is reckoned as if he has wrought a division within You, God. These ten attributes follow this design: One long attribute, which extends God’s goodness to all, without reckoning whether they merit it or not; one short attribute, which extends God’s goodness solely to those who merit it, and one middle attribute, which reckons who merits and who does not, yet compassionately grants to all. You, God, are He Who steers them, and nobody steers You; not anyone above, not anyone below, and not anyone from any side. Absent their garments, the holy attributes could not bring souls into our physical, unholy world. You fashioned several attributes, which serve as bodies to these garments; they are termed “bodies” when set beside the garments that cover over them. The attributes are named body parts. Each is likened to a distinct part of the body, as follows: Chessed, kindness, is likened to the right arm. Gevurah, severity and power, is likened to the left arm. Tiferet, harmony, is likened to the principal part of the body,4 the chest and stomach area. Netzach, victory, and Hod, glory, are likened to the two thighs. Yesod, foundation, is likened to the end of the principal part of the body, which is the sign of the holy Circumcision—the Covenant that God established with the Jewish Nation. Malchut, royalty and kingship, is likened to the mouth, which utters and clarifies a person’s thoughts. Hence we call Malchut “Oral Torah,” for the Oral Torah clarifies the meaning of Written Torah. Chochmah, wisdom, is likened to the brain; that is, the thoughts that lie inside the brain. Binah, understanding, is likened to the heart, for when a person understands a matter properly, the heart feels it. Concerning these last two attributes—Chochmah, wisdom and Binah, understanding, both concealed as a person’s thoughts are—the Torah writes: The hidden things belong to the Lord, our God, for He alone knows of them.5 Highest among all the attributes is Keter, Supernal Crown; it resembles a royal crown upon a person. The verse in Isaiah says of Keter: From the beginning He tells what the end is. Keter is likewise like a head upon which tefillin are set; it encompasses the attributes, just as a head encompasses the brain and tefillin encompass the Torah passages within them.
