<english>The third sort are foolish sinners, those who have walked the path of transgression. On account of their sins they suffer1 and grow ill. They cannot endure to take any food. So grave is their illness that they reach the gates of death and nearly perish of hunger. They cried out to the Lord in their anguish, and He delivered them from their woes. Unlike a physician, who heals by medical treatment, God merely sent out His command that they be restored, and He healed them. He rescued them from death, from being buried in their graves. Such persons should give laud to the Lord for His kindness and recount to people2 the marvels He wrought. Let them present thanksgiving sacrifices, brought when someone is rescued from particular perils, and they should recount His deeds to others with joy.</english>

<english>God transforms rivers into arid wastes and water-springs into parched ground. He transforms a land yielding abundant produce into salt-waste yielding none, as recompense for the wickedness of those who dwell upon such lands. Conversely, God transforms wastes into lakes and arid ground into water-springs. He places hungry folk there and provides them food. They found a city there for inhabitants to dwell in. They sow seed upon the fields and they sow vineyards; the fields yield grain, and the vineyards yield produce. God grants them blessing, and they increase greatly; He does not let their livestock diminish. Yet should the inhabitants of this city sin, they diminish in number and are brought low through oppression and grief. God can pour disgrace upon notables and cause them to wander lost in a pathless waste. But He also lifts poor folk from their affliction and makes their households great, like flocks of sheep. Just and upright folk will behold that God aids the poor, and they will exult; every wicked folk will be too ashamed to speak, and they will shut their mouths. One who is wise ought to remember these things, and he will grasp the gracious ways of the Lord.</english>

<text>1 Alternatively, “they afflict themselves.” The verse refers to such people as “foolish sinners.” Before people afflict themselves (by fasting or the like) in order to atone for their sins, they should first focus on fixing the main issue that leads a person to sin; namely, the failure to recognize and accept God’s authority.</text>

<text>2 Not only should we praise God and discuss His wonders among our fellow Jews, but we should also do so among “people” at large—the nations of the world. They, too, should appreciate God’s goodness.</text>

<text>3 These verses allude to the journey of the soul into this world, “down into the sea.” Just as the sea conceals the earth beneath it, so does the body conceal the soul. Some souls, however, are provided with a “ship”—a strong community of God-fearing Jews, which helps keep them afloat. Other souls find themselves in an environment where Judaism is scarce, and this causes them a great deal of pain. (The Hebrew word for “ship,” אֳנִי, can also be translated as “pain.”) It is our responsibility to “do work in the mighty waters”—to help save these souls by creating a Jewish environment in which they can stay afloat and thrive.</text>

<text>4 Throughout this prayer, we praise and thank God because He has protected people from four kinds of physical danger. Each of these represents a spiritual danger that a person may face during the work week, when he is less exposed to Godliness: 1) The desert—being involved in empty, unproductive pursuits. 2) Prison—becoming imprisoned by the evil inclination. 3) Illness—becoming ill and weak in heart or mind. 4) Drowning—becoming caught up and overwhelmed with business pursuits. We thank God for saving us from these four dangers on a daily basis.</text>
