<english>Blessed are You, Lord, our God, Sovereign of the universe, Who causes a weighty sense of sleep to fall on my eyes, as though ropes were drawing them shut, and makes slumber descend onto my eyelids. At morning’s rising, God grants me sight by giving light to the pupil of my eye. Let it accord with Your will, Lord, my God and the God of my ancestors, that I should rest in slumber in peace, and that You should raise me toward a good life and for peace. <english>Offer praise1 unto the Lord for He is good; for His kindness endures forever. Four sorts of persons exist who have been delivered by the Lord. They should each offer praises to Him, for He rescued them from the grasp of the oppressor. He assembled them out of every country, from regions of sunrise and sunset, from the north and the isles in the sea. First come those who strayed from the path in the desert2—amid the wilderness—and they could not find an inhabited city. For they were famished and parched, their soul within them grew faint.3 They cried out to the Lord in their anguish and He delivered them from their woes. He led them along the proper path so they could arrive at an inhabited city. Such persons should offer praise to the Lord for His kindness and recount to people the wonders He performed. They ought to make known that He satisfied the souls of those who were thirsty and He filled the souls of those who were hungry with abundant good food. The second sort are those who sit in a dark dungeon, which resembles the shadow of death, those who are tied up in affliction and in iron chains. They remain confined for they went against the words of God; they spurned God's counsel. He brought them forth from the dark dungeon and the shadow of death and He shattered apart their chains. Such persons should offer laud to the Lord for His kindness and recount to others the wonders He performed. <text>1 We say this Psalm before Minchah on Friday afternoon, at the end of the work week, to thank God for having protected our souls and our bodies while we were involved in worldly pursuits. The Psalm is not said when a festival or Chol Hamoed occur on Friday, because we do not work on those days.</text>

<text>2 A "desert" symbolizes a place that appears spiritually empty and uninhabited by Godliness. In exile, we are compared to those who are lost in a desert—we do not see God's revealed presence.</text>

<text>3 When a person becomes physically hungry and thirsty, the soul becomes weakened as well. This is because the soul desires to elevate the sparks of holiness that are found in foods and drinks. When we eat or drink for a holy purpose (such as to have energy for learning Torah or performing good deeds), we elevate the sparks within those foods, thereby giving energy and satisfaction not only to the body, but to the soul as well.</text>
