The Sages explain that each Hebrew letter of the word \"one,\" אחד, has a deeper meaning. The first letter, א, has the numerical value of one, corresponding to the One God. The second letter, ח, has the numerical value of eight, corresponding to the seven heavens and one earth. The third letter, ד, corresponds to the four directions—north, south, east, and west. Accordingly, the entire word אחד teaches us that God is united and one with the entire universe—the heavens and the earth, in all directions. Although His creations may appear to exist independent of Him; in reality, they are one and united with Him.",
