<english>should hang upon the four corners of their garments. This is to be observed at every season; it is a precept for all their generations. They should affix a blue cord to the tzitzit on each corner.1 All the threads hanging together shall be tzitzit for you. Tzitzit serve as a reminder, and when you shall look upon these tzitzit, you will recall all the precepts of the Lord. For the Hebrew word tzitzit has a numerical value of 600. Together with the 8 threads and 5 knots upon each corner, one reaches 613—the count of precepts in the Torah. Recalling the precepts will lead you to perform them. Then you shall not stray after your hearts' cravings and the lures your eyes behold. Straying after your desires leads you to wander from Torah's path. Gaze upon the tzitzit, so that you will recall and perform all of My precepts. Through this, you shall be holy unto your God. I am the Lord, your God, Who brought you forth from the land of Egypt so as to be a God for you, and that you might accept Me as your God by observing My precepts. I am the Lord, your God.</english>

<english>We believe2 all that was uttered in the Shema, and it is true. For us it stands as an established truth that He is the Lord, our God, there is none other besides Him, and we, the Children of Israel, are His people. God delivers us from the hand of kings who seek to injure us; our King it is Who redeems us from the grasp of every cruel ruler who would injure us. He is the God Who exacts retribution from our foes on our behalf. He repays all our foes who seek to destroy our souls; He punishes them. He works an unbounded measure of great deeds and performs wonders, until they so abound that they cannot be numbered. He preserved our lives when our foes sought to slay us, and He suffered not our feet to slip when our foes assailed us. He brought us to the high places that our foes once ruled, and He multiplied our strength over all our foes. He is the God Who exacted retribution from Pharaoh for what he inflicted upon us in Egypt; He wrought wonders and miracles for us in the land of the Egyptians, who were the offspring of Noah's son Ham. God in wrath struck and slew all the firstborn Egyptians, He brought forth His people, the Children of Israel, from among them, and ushered them into an everlasting freedom. God guided His children through the twelve divided portions of the Sea of Reeds, and those pursuing them, and their foes, God plunged into the deep sea. When God's children, the Jewish Nation, beheld His might, they praised and offered thanks to His name, and they freely received Him as sovereign over them. Moses and the Children of Israel with great joy lifted their voices in song to You, and they all declared:</english>

<english>Who from among all the great and mighty creations resembles You, Lord? Who is like God? You are clothed in holiness. The wonders that You work are so awesome3 that they cannot be adequately extolled. Your children, the Jewish Nation, beheld Your dominion when You split the Sea of Reeds before Moses and the entire nation. They proclaimed proudly, "This is my God!" and said "the Lord will rule as king forever and ever." Jeremiah states: The Lord has redeemed the Jewish Nation, the Children of Jacob, and He has</english>

<text>1 This word can also be translated as "consuming." When a fire consumes its fuel, the color of the flame closest to the fuel is blue—similar to the color of the blue string to which the Torah refers. This type of string symbolizes an ideal world—a world that is nullified and "consumed" by God's holiness.</text>

<text>2 Following the Shema during morning prayers, we affirm that the words contained in the Shema are "true and certain." Here, however, we merely declare that we "believe" that they are true. The reason for this difference is that at night there is a lack of Godly revelation, just as there is a lack of physical light, and we need to strengthen our belief that the words of the Shema are indeed true. During the "day," when Godliness shines brighter, we declare with absolute certainty that they are true.</text>
