<english>if your money might be lost. These utterances of Torah, which I charge you to fulfill this day and each day, must remain ever new and vivid to you, and they must be inscribed upon your heart; let them occupy your thoughts continually. You must impart Torah to your offspring and pupils until they grasp it well enough to reply to any inquiry concerning it. You ought to occupy yourselves with Torah's words and utter them at every opportunity: while you dwell in your home, while you travel the road, while you recline by night, and when you arise at dawn. These utterances, the Shema's words, are to be inscribed in tefillin. You must bind the hand-tefillin upon your arm as a token to recall God, and the head-tefillin are to rest upon your head, over the place between your eyes. <english>wine, and oil, and none shall be seized by your foes. I shall set abundant grass in your fields, so you need not relocate your animals elsewhere to pasture them. Not only will you be blessed with food, but you will eat of it and be sated thereby. Yet you must take great care and watch yourselves, lest your hearts be lured to rebel against God, and you turn aside from His ways. Should this occur, you will fall into idolatry and begin to serve false gods that are alien to their makers since they afford them no help, and you will foolishly prostrate yourselves to these false gods. The Lord's wrath will then blaze against you. God will shut the heavens, and rain will cease; the ground will yield none of its produce, for nothing will grow. You will swiftly be destroyed, and you will be driven out from the good land—the Land of Israel—which the Lord grants to you.</english>

<text>1 The word "today" refers to this world (as opposed to "tomorrow," the World to Come). God tells us that if we follow His commandments in this world, we will make it a dwelling place for Him and we will be able to connect to Him (the Hebrew word for "command" can also mean "connect.")</text>

<text>2 We are not commanded to serve God for His benefit, because He does not need our service—He lacks nothing and needs nothing. Rather, the purpose of our service is to improve ourselves—particularly the way we perceive the world. Instead of seeing a place that is spiritually dark and seemingly empty of Godliness, we must transform the world into a place where we can recognize Godliness.</text>

<text>3 Grain is a basic food, corresponding to the basic, revealed aspects of the Torah. Wine has the ability to reveal one's secrets, corresponding to the inner, secret dimension of the Torah. Oil floats on top of wine, corresponding to the innermost "secrets of the secrets" of the Torah. This verse is teaching us that must "gather" all parts of the Torah together—we must study them as one.</text>
