<text>1 On a basic level, washing the fingertips before saying the blessings after a meal is for reasons of hygiene—to wash off any "Sodomite salt" that might remain, which can afflict the eye upon contact. On a deeper level, it represents washing off any stinginess or lack of empathy we might have after eating a hearty meal. These feelings can dim our eyes from seeing and caring about the needs of others. We rid ourselves of these feelings before blessing God after the meal.</text>
