<english>עַל The following song recounts how the Jewish Nation was driven into exile in Babylon after the First Temple's destruction: By Babylon's rivers we sat, and we wept as we recalled the ruined city of Zion (Jerusalem). Our harps, used for music in the Temple, we hung on willow trees in Babylon lest our foes should see them. We acted thus since those who held us captive, Nebuchadnezzar and his men, called on us for songs for them there; those who taunted us bade us play joyful music. They demanded, "Sing for us the songs of Jerusalem, those you sang in the Temple." Yet we said inwardly: How can we sing the songs composed for the Lord, on land that is unholy and strange? Each of us vowed: Should I forget Jerusalem's city, may my right hand forget how to move. As none forgets the use of his hand, so the Jewish Nation will never forget Jerusalem. Should I fail to remember you, Jerusalem, may my tongue cling to my mouth's roof, so that I shall be unable to eat anything. Let that likewise befall me if I do not set Jerusalem in my thoughts at the very height of my happiness.</english>
