<english>What follows is a song composed by Asaf: God stands at the assemblies of judges to observe whether they will judge fairly or not. God also sits among the judges to render His own judgment. Should the judges fail to judge properly, God addresses them: How long will you judge with wickedness? Will you always favor the wicked? Render justice to the needy and an orphan; act righteously toward the poor and one without any money. Deliver a needy person and a poor person; rescue them from the hand of the wicked people who seek to exploit them. The judges who fail to judge properly do not know the sin they commit and do not grasp it. They walk in darkness; they fail to perceive what is taking place. When judges fail to judge properly, all the earth's foundations tremble, for justice is among the three pillars that uphold the world. I, God, declared that when you judge with truth and fairness you are likened to angels; all of you3 are likened to heavenly beings. But because you have not judged fairly, you shall die as ordinary mortals. You shall fall from power like any human prince. Arise God, and judge the people of the earth, for You hold sway over all the nations and possess the power to judge them rightly.</english>

<english>A God of retribution is the Lord. God of retribution, make Yourself known. God, Judge of the earth, arise and grant arrogant, wicked people what they deserve. Lord, how long shall the wicked endure? How long shall the wicked exult in their evil ways? They persist in speaking ill; all the wicked behave arrogantly against You. They oppress Your people, Lord; they inflict suffering upon the Jewish Nation, Your heritage. They slay the widow and the convert, and they murder the orphans. When the wicked commit evil, they say, "God will not see; the God of Jacob will not trouble to grasp our deeds." You, senseless among the people ought to understand what will befall you. You are fools; when will you gain wisdom? Do you imagine that God, the One Who plants the ear in each person, will not hear you? Do you imagine that God, the One Who forms the eye in each person, will not see you? Do you imagine that God, the One Who chastises nations, will not chastise you? Do you imagine that God, the One Who grants knowledge to people, will not know of the evil you commit? The Lord knows that people's thoughts are as nothing beside His thoughts. <text>1 God's "right hand" is associated with His attribute of kindness. In this verse we declare that God's kindness is filled with "righteousness," meaning that He righteously and fairly determines who will receive His kindness.</text>

<text>2 An alternative translation: "He will lead us as one leads a young person." (The Hebrew word עָלַם means "young person.") Just as a father teaches his young child how to walk by helping him up and then gradually letting go of him until he falls, so should we realize that God sometimes allows people to "stumble" so that they will inspect their deeds and improve their Divine service. Eventually, this will enable them to "walk" closer to God.</text>

<text>3 Your entire being—your body as well as your soul—has the potential to be elevated to the level of "heavenly beings." This can be achieved by fulfilling God's commandments. Each time we carry out God's will, we strengthen our connection to Him and elevate ourselves.</text>
