<english>So now, Lord, our God, Who led forth the Jewish Nation, Your nation, from the land of Egypt by a mighty hand and fashioned for Yourself a great name, one renowned unto this day, we confess that we have sinned and we have done wickedly. Lord, even as You displayed toward us all Your kindness and righteousness when You delivered us from Egypt, likewise, at this hour, please display Your righteousness toward us and avert Your anger and Your fury from Your city, Jerusalem, wherein Your holy Temple Mount stands. For by our sins and by the sins of our forebears, Jerusalem and Your nation, the Jewish Nation, have been brought to disgrace before those who encircle us. So now, God, hearken to the prayer and supplication of Your servant, and let Your presence shine upon Your Holy Temple, which lies ruined and desolate. Should You not act for our sake, do it for Your own sake, Lord.</english>

<text>1 We ask God to “listen, forgive, and pay attention”—in that specific order. Though at first glance the terms “listen” and “pay attention” appear synonymous, there is an important difference between them: We can listen to something without necessarily understanding what it means, but we can only pay attention to something if we understand it. Accordingly, “pay attention” refers to a higher level of awareness than “listen.” Before we can expect God to “pay attention” to us, however, we must be forgiven for our sins. For this reason, we first ask God to “listen” to our prayers on a basic level, then we ask to “forgive” us for our sins, and only then do we ask Him to pay proper attention to us and respond to our needs.</text>

<text>2 A father has mercy on his child for two reasons: First, because he has a natural closeness and connection with his child; and second, because he knows his child’s natural tendencies and therefore understands his behavior and forgives him more easily. We ask God to treat us, His children, in the same manner.</text>
