<english>to execrate my foes, to wipe out their name and remnant, to blot out their name that it fade to nothing; visit upon my tormentors the very snares they craftily devised, declaring, "The Lord does not behold, the God of Jacob does not discern." He struck the dispersed nation and caused them grief, yet annihilation was never His intent; their sin was but outward,1 [therefore] He rebuked them through taking away the King's [Achashverosh's] ring [only] to alarm them; the gracious God kept His pledge to raise them high in the nations' sight: Within the land of their foes, I will neither cast them off nor disdain them unto their destruction.2 He hinted [in the Torah] at the happenings [of Purim] destined to overtake the crushed and downtrodden people, writing haster astir3 (I shall conceal My countenance,) and mor deror4 (pure myrrh) of the orchard, to ruin Haman on the morrow,5 and ha-min ha-etz6 (of the tree) [that he will be hung] on the pole, and in place of the thorn [Haman] shall rise the cypress [Mordechai] and in place of the briar [Queen Vashti] shall rise the myrtle [Esther].7 He [Achashverosh] heeded falsehoods and promulgated a hateful and grievous decree; he clothed himself in priestly vestments when he miscalculated the appointed date [of their redemption], and had the sundry vessels of the Bet Hamikdash employed [at the banquet]; and Satan likewise came to take his stand among them. When those dwelling in Shushan ate of the banquet of him who had oppressed them, [Satan] opened his mouth to indict them and to deliver them into the hand [of Haman] who bid a price for them; God assented that a writ be drawn to extinguish the hope [of their salvation, fulfilling the Scriptural verse:] I said I shall put an end to them, I shall blot out their memory from among men.8 The sacred angels of peace shed bitter tears, calling out, "O Merciful One, regard Your covenant, do not annul it; rejecting it; the Heritage [Torah] perceived it, put on raiment of widowhood and grief, set her hands upon her head and went forth weeping. [Elijah] the Tishbite bound his loins with a sash of sackcloth, hastened to tell the three Patriarchs who sleep in the cave of Machpelah; then he sped to [Moses] the shepherd [exclaiming], "How do you slumber untroubled? Arise, cry to your God, perhaps He will relent!" He [Elijah] counseled [Mordechai] the linguist that the edict was sealed merely with a seal of clay; from Nineveh9 they learned how to still His wrath even once the edict has been uttered; [Mordechai] the son of Kish rapped at the doors of the house of learning, wrapped himself in sackcloth, and sat among ashes. He assembled children before him for three days, neither drinking nor eating, that by the voice of Jacob [in prayer and study] he might enfeeble the hand of [Haman] the brazen one; his hands were raised in prayer to God, "Rescue me from shame [by</english>
