A [protective] wall they were for us, a shelter on the day of fury. With their prayer they suppressed [Your] wrath, with their cries they restrained [Your] anger. You answered them before they called to You; they knew the way to plead and to appease You. For their merit You showed a father's compassion; empty-handed You did not turn them away. Through our many wrongdoings we lost them; because of our sins they were taken from us. To their rest they departed, and to sighs they left us. Those who repaired the fences are gone; perished are they who turned Your wrath aside. No more are they who stood in the breach, they who were worthy to appease You with prayer1. In the four corners of the earth we have wandered, and relief we have found nowhere. Shamefaced, we return to You, to seek You, O Lord, in the hour of our distress.",
