<english>The congregation has appointed a day of fasting to entreat for its needs; to return to You, to search, to examine its ways; You who are readily placated through the Thirteen Attributes [of Mercy], Whom it is hard to provoke, grant forbearance to Your wrath. On all sides You are adorned with ornaments, do not divest Yourself of them; the diadem of compassion and pardon are Your glorious adornment; array Yourself in the crown of our sincere praise and prayer, extend life and sustenance to Your creatures. [Jerusalem] the capital1 lies destroyed, and the pure Table stands emptied; [the Altar] which provides sustenance and atonement is withdrawn from Divine service; regard the outpouring of our souls as the wine-offering [upon the Altar]; be for us a protector and sustainer, a redeemer, healer and forgiver. This befits You since she [Israel] is girded with Your Torah; through the generosity of Your spirit, let her be nourished and sustained; for [only] to You does she send her requests, voice her plaints and lift her voice [in supplication], the mention of her cares she speaks and sets before You. And to You she lifts [her eyes] and in You she takes refuge; withdraw from her her affliction, for who is like You, mighty God! When according to Your custom You allot sustenance to Your legions, grant kindness to [Israel], the disgraced wanderer. Gone are the skilled and learned to appease You with pleasant words; vanished are those able to confound the Accuser, who made [Israel] beloved to their Father in heaven, who were careful and exacting [in the observance of the precepts], the God-fearing who spoke of His Torah morning and evening. [Therefore] we have appointed a fast day for youths and elders alike; we chant prayer and supplication, and earnestly enter within [Your] gates; hold back from wrongdoing [Israel] who is downtrodden and increase our well-being; raise from the dust the poor and from the dung-heap the destitute. Graciously bestow upon us traits sublime, noble and distinguished, our Surety dwelling in the supernal heights; in a bath of purification cleanse us of our minor and grievous sins; may our prayer find favor, to glorify You with exultation.</english>
